Joseph Patrick McCarthy, 90, past away surrounded by family Friday, April 7, 2017, at Caledonia Care and Rehab.
Joe was born March 1, 1927, to Fay and Rosemary (Manahan) McCarthy in St. Charles, MN. He went to grade school and high school in St. Charles. Joe enlisted in the Navy during his senior year of high school, and is a WWII veteran. After serving in the military, Joe attended St. Mary’s University in Winona graduating in 1951. It was that year he started his career with State Farm Insurance Company, in Caledonia, MN. After settling in a new town, Joe met his future bride, Mary Flynn. She had started teaching in Caledonia the same year. After two years they were married on August 12, 1953. With that union was born five children. Joe continued as a State Farm Insurance agent for 44 years, he enjoyed the work and serving his customers.
He was an active member in the community; involved as a Eucharistic Minister, and apart of in The Knights of Columbus, American Legion Post 191, Veterans of Foreign Wars, DFL, and Commercial Club. When Joe wasn’t working or giving his time to others, he loved golfing at Ma Cal Grove, and spent 47 years with family on the Mississippi River, in Brownsville, MN.
Joe is survived by his wife, Mary (Flynn) McCarthy; children, Mary (Jim) All, Ann (Bil) Martin, James (Jeske Noordergraaf) McCarthy, Robert (Joyce) McCarthy, Patricia (John) Schulte; grandchildren, Katie (Josh) Klitzke, Jimmy All, Sarah (John) Neilson, Tyler Martin, Ginnie Martin, Clay McCarthy, Maggie (Andy) Eyre, Clare (Josh) O’Brien, Mary Katherine (Ryan) Mauss, Taylor Schulte, Samuel Schulte, Brennan Schulte; great grandchildren include, Mara Klitzke, Zoe Klitzke, Angus Eyre, and Ingrid Eyre. Joe is also survived by his sister Gen (Hugh) Theismann, sister-in-law Deonne Flynn, brothers-in-law Tom (Pat) Flynn, Pat (Jeanne) Flynn, and Donald (Helen) Flynn. He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Marie (Charles) Theismann, Helen Smith, brothers-in-law Robert (Francis) Flynn, George (Rose) Flynn, John Flynn, and James Flynn.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 am on Wed. April 12th, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Caledonia. Fr. Matt Fasnacht will officiate and burial will military honors will be at Calvary Cemetery, Caledonia. Visitation will start at 9:30 AM Wed. before the service at the church. McCormick Funeral Home, Caledonia is assisting the family with arrangements.
Memorials are preferred to St. Mary's Grade School, the Winona Diocese Television Mass or Donor's Choice.
