Virginia Ann (Schroeder) Hughes passed away Saturday, October 25th, in her Caledonia home, surrounded by family. In her final days she was at peace and spoke often about her faith and her love for her family.

Virginia was born October 2nd, 1930, in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and grew up an only child to parents Dr. Henry and Gladys Duiker. She attended two years of college at the University of Chicago and Bradley University, where she met Donald Schroeder. They were married November 15, 1950, and moved to Plainville, MN, where Don pursued a watch-making internship. In 1953, they opened Schroeder Jewelry in Caledonia, MN. During this time, Virginia was actively involved in Eastern Star, and was Worthy Grand Matron of the Minnesota Chapter in 1970. After Don’s passing, Virginia continued their jewelry business. She retired in 2009, having met the community’s jewelry needs for 56 years. Virginia married Steven Douglas Hughes on August 29, 1992. Doug and Virginia enjoyed attending coin shows, watching the Cubs, and socializing at the Redwood CafĂ©. She loved the arts, especially theatre and ballet, as well as sports and following the achievements of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Virginia is survived by her husband Steven Douglas Hughes; her sons Robert (Mary Kay) of Caledonia, MN, Scott (Cinda) of Eau Claire, WI, and Jeffrey (Sarah) of Delavan, WI; 8 grandchildren: Rebekah (Travis) Schumacher of Colorado Springs, CO; Elisha (Emily) Schroeder of Honolulu, HI; David (Breanne) Schroeder of Eau Claire, WI; Lucas (Angelo) Schroeder of Bremerton, WA; Kenneth Jones of Fort Collins, CO; Elisabeth (Brian) Butterfield of Sumner, IA; Tyler Jones and Katherine Jones of Delavan, WI. She is also survived by 4 great-grandchildren: Isaiah, Cameron, Maddison, and Lincoln. Virginia was preceded in death by her first husband, Donald, and her daughter Melissa Ann.

A memorial service in Virginia’s honor will be conducted at 3:00 p.m. on November 8th at the McCormick Funeral Home in Caledonia, MN, with the visitation preceding the service at 1:00 p.m.
