William Charles McCarthy, 65, of Caledonia, passed away unexpectedly, Monday, June 16, 2014, at Caledonia Care and Rehab, Caledonia. He was born October 30, 1948 in Caledonia to Charles and Mary Jeanne (Haas) McCarthy. William graduated from Loretto High School in 1966 and attended Winona State College for one year.
Bill and his family would be honored if memorial donations would be made to the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill (NAMI) on his behalf.
As a youth, Bill was an alter boy at St. John’s and St. Peter’s Catholic churches for many years. He was an expert model builder, electric train enthusiast, Scout, baseball player, basketball player, archer and golfer. Growing up near an independent neighborhood root beer stand, Bill maintained a life-long passion for good root beer.
Bill enjoyed modern European history and reveled in Caledonia’s local history, family lineages and relationships. He appreciated people maintaining things so they would look nice and last.
During his adulthood Bill shouldered the burdens of Schizophrenia, benefiting from the encouragement of those at the LaCresent ABC. In recent years Bill especially appreciated the understanding, support and many kindnesses of the staff at Caledonia Care and Rehab.
He is survived by his brother, Michael, of Stillwater, MN; nephews, Patrick and Daniel of Stillwater, great nephew, Nicholas of Rochester, MN; aunts, Stella Urbain of Caledonia, Lou Kerndt of Omaha, NE, and Frances Haas of Gold River, CA. and several cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; aunts and uncles, Helen and Milton Mellick, Ed Urbain, Ron Haas, and Holly Mae McCarthy; and a cousin, Martin Urbain.
A Mass of Christain Burial will be at 10:30 am, Saturday, June 21, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Caledonia. The Most Rev. Bernard Harrington will officiate and burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Caledonia. Visitation will be from 10-10:30 am Saturday before the service at the church. McCormick Funeral Home Caledonia is assisting the family with arrangements.
