Melvin "Toby"L. Beardmore, 86, of Caledonia, died peacefully, surrounded by his family on Sunday, April 6, 2014 at Mayo Health Systems, La Crosse, WI. He was born October 27, 1927, near Waukon, IA, to William and Bodelia (Moller) Beardmore. Toby served in the U.S. Army and then married Mary "Marguerite" Longueville September 5, 1950 in Decorah, IA. She preceded him in death August 16, 2010. Toby worked at many occupations during his lifetime, including: being a barber,milkman, and farm laborer; working at Trane Co., Caledonia Oil, McCarthy Trucking, and Caledonia Livestock Auction. He most recently worked at the U.S. Postal Service in Caledonia until his retirement. He was a member of the American Legion Post 191, St. Mary's Parish and was active with Bingo night, and MaCal Grove Country Club. He enjoyed golfing, boating, hunting, shell collecting and traveling. He especially enjoyed attending the Senior Dining in Caledonia.
He is survived by a daughter, Sandra Goodhart (life companion Ed Insell) of Warsaw, MO, 2 sons, Bill (Dianne) Beardmore of Boone, IA and Gary
(Cathy) Beardmore of La Crescent, MN; 8 grandchildren, Joseph Edgell, Shawn Shenkemeyer, Christina Downey, Brian Goodhart, Tracy Simpson, Erin Sorenson, Adam Beardmore, and Ryan Beardmore; 14 great grandchildren, Hayden Edgell, Rylie, Reece, Max, and Eleanor Downey, Ruby Shenkemeyer, Mariah Jansen, Ronald Goodhart, Josh, Bryce, and Brogan Sorenson, Chantelle, Cody, and Chloe Simpson; and special caretaker, Amy Amundson.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by 6 brothers and sisters, Edna DuBay, Howard Beardmore, Calvin Beardmore, Vivian Arneson, Cecil Goodell, and Ruby Senn.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 am, Friday, April 11, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 513 S. Pine St., Caledonia. Father Matt Fasnacht will officiate and burial with military honors will be in Calvary Cemetery, Caledonia. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 pm on Thurs. at Holy Family Hall, next to the church, where a prayer service will be held at 7:30 pm. Visitation will also be one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday. McCormick Funeral Home, Caledonia is assisting the family with arrangements.
