Earl E. Wagner, 94, died February 17, 2012 at Oakwood Hills Retirement Home in Eau Claire, Wisconsin.
Born April 26, 1917 to John P. and Margaret (Blazen) Wagner, Earl was a native of Caledonia and was a well-known face on Main Street, having done business as Wagner Insurance Agency for over 67 years. He retired in 2001.
Earl was a member of St. Mary’s Parish and the Knights of Columbus. He was a veteran of WWII, serving in Europe during and after the D-Day invasion. One of Earl’s favorite pastimes was fly fishing and he was noted for his hand-tied flies and handmade fishing poles. He was one of the original directors of Ma-Cal-Grove Country Club and was an avid golfer well into his late 80’s. Earl was co-founder of the local chapter of Ducks Unlimited and a member of the VFW. Earl was very active in the American Legion and had volunteered his time to run the Legion’s bingo game for more than 20 years.
Survivors include his daughter Suzanne Tristano and her husband Richard Siepkowski of Hernando FL; son John Robert Wagner of San Francisco; daughter Mary Knapp of Elgin IL, son Dr. Paul Wagner and his wife Virginia Crow Wagner of Calgary, Alberta, Canada; son Dr. Peter Wagner and his wife Lynn Valentine Wagner of Eau Clare, WI; 15 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. Earl was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Evelyn Greisch Wagner, his sister Vivian Voiovich, and grandson Matthew Tristano.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 am on Friday, February 24, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Caledonia. Father Gregory Leif will officiate and burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Caledonia. Visitation will be from 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Thurs., at Holy Family Hall, next to the church, where a prayer service will be held at 6:30. Visitation will also be from 10:30 to 11 am Friday morning at the church. McCormick Funeral Home is assisting the family.
