Sr. Mary A. McCormick, 97, of Maryknoll died Friday, Jan. 7, 2011 at the Maryknoll motherhouse in Ossining, NY. She was born December 10, 1914 in Caledonia to Matthew and Rose (McDonald) McCormick.
Sr. Mary graduated from Loretto High School, Caledonia in 1931. She got her degree from LaCrosse Teachers College in 1933 and joined the Maryknoll Sisters in 1935.
She worked as a missionary for the Maryknoll in the Philippines where she was a prisoner of war during WWII. She also taught in New York, Missouri, California, Arizona and Japan. She was an established author, writing the history of the Maryknoll Sisters in education in Asia and children's books. She retired to the Maryknoll motherhouse in New York in 1994.
She is survived by 2 brothers, Joseph (Pat) McCormick of Leesburg, FL and James (Anna Marie) McCormick of Caledonia and many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, 2 sisters, Margaret Jahn and Helen Flynn; and 2 brothers, Leo and Michael McCormick.
A memorial mass will be at 10:30 am, Sat. Jan 15 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Caledonia. Father Gregory Leif will officiate and burial will be in Maryknoll, NY Memorials may be given to the Maryknoll Sisters in New York. McCormick Funeral Home, Caledonia is assisting the family with arrangements.
